Wentworth Veterans Memorial

The Wentworth Veterans Memorial Inc. is a grassroots organization formed by local veterans and their families to commemorate all those with ties to Wentworth who have served in the Armed Forces. The concept has been in play for many years and has finally come to fruition with a location, design concept and a non profit business entity with a tax exempt status from the IRS.

The location of the Memorial is on the lawn of the Wentworth Historical Society along Rt. 25 and East Side Road. The Wentworth Historical Society overwhelmingly approved our proposal and has partnered with us in this endeavor. The Memorial compliments the Historical Society Building and ties into the covered bridge #71 with a walkway. The old Wentworth Town Hall which is across the street has been registered as a historical site and soon to be rehabbed to its original glory. These structures will now have a historical focus for the town and will compliment each other.

The design concept for the Memorial is a simple but elegant design. It consists of 11 local granite boulders with a brass plaque mounted on the stones to commemorate each armed conflict our country has been involved in. The center stone lists all of the branches of the Armed Forces. The remaining 10 stones are arranged in a V shape to parallel the two adjacent roads. The point of the V has an enormous rectangular rock that brings the eye of the north bound travelers on Rt. 25 up to the flagpole. This further accentuates the American flag. Ten granite boulders will be natural on the outside facing the parallel roads, giving it a “Stonehenge” effect. The inner faces are smooth and mounted with brass plaques to denote the various conflicts memorialized. The flagpole is surrounded by a layer cake of curved stones to create a sitting area. A stone walkway made of engraved pavers will be in front of these stones leading to the flagpole, past the Historical Society building and up to the covered bridge.

The creation of this monument occurred in 2 stages. The first goal was to place the boulders in the V formation and construct the flagpole base and was completed in 2019. Now that the basic structure is in place, the stones area waiting the brass plaques to mounted in the Spring of 2020.

The second phase will be the construction of the walkway thru the Memorial, past the Wentworth Historical Society and ending at the covered bridge. In an effort to raise funds, the paving stones will be for sale and engraved with those Veterans and their families who are interesting in being remembered. These pavers are for anyone, just a family name, quote or remembrance will be greatly appreciated. A site has been set up to sell the pavers at polarengraving.com/wentworthveteransmemorial. Once we have sold enough pavers for a good part of the walkway, they will be delivered for installation. Benches along the stone memorial are for sale and will also help to fund the project.

As a remembrance to each individual from Wentworth that served, we are compiling a book which will be kept in the Wentworth Historical Society. Please use the link in this website to access the registration form.

All donations are greatly appreciated and can be sent to Wentworth Veterans Memorial, PO Box 64, Wentworth, NH 03282. Funds are still needed to purchase the brass plaques, install the walkway and landscape the park.
